Why you need website links

By Lucie Battaini

If you want people to be able to find your website, being at the top of search engine results is key to your success. SEO is so important that there are companies and firms who’s sole purpose is to provide search engine optimisation services to other businesses.

While there are hundreds of variables that determine your search engine ranking, one of the most important is links. Each link is considered a ‘vote’ for your site, and the more highly regarded the linking site is in google, the more that vote counts. Here are a few tips on how to find and get quality back links to your site.

Getting a link is easy – there are hundreds of free directories and submissions sites out there. However, not all links are created equal. As mentioned, a link from a quality source will help boost your ranking, but on the flip side a low quality link can actually hurt your rankings. So, how do you tell the difference?

As mentioned earlier this week, social bookmarking sites are a great way for people to share sites with friends, family and well anyone else who stumbles across their profile online. You can use these sites to link back to your own website.

Take full advantage of websites such as Squidoo.com, start a lens and make sure you link back to your site in your author profile and in the lens content once or twice (don’t spam).

As well as your own blog, start a blogger.com blog and link back to your own site here too. You don’t need to give this blog as much attention as your primary one (which should be on your own domain) but the occasional post here will provide another good link back to your site.

Releasing a new product or have something newsworthly to share? Create a press release and publish it on press release sites. Not only will it give you a quality link back to your site, you may also get some free media exposure.

While some of these techniques may be time consuming, they’re easy to do and a must to help you get your site to start to rank well in search engines.
