Marketing Monday: Getting Started With Affiliate Marketing
By
Welcome to the third post in this month’s Marketing Monday series.
While it may sound complicated at first, affiliate marketing is an easy online business to start, or just to try to supplement your existing income from another business. It does however require work to become successful, just like everything else. Here are some tips on how to get your affiliate marketing efforts off the ground.
Chose a market, and not a product.
If you focus all of your efforts on a particular product, you have little room for growth, and you may also have a problem on your hands should that product disappear. Instead, focus on a particular market and promote multiple products within that area.
Test the waters
On the other hand, once you’ve chosen your preferred area, some start adding many products right away. Chosing too many products at the beginning can result in you becomming overwhelmed and losing focus. It’s best to start with one or two products to get the feel for how affiliate marketing works, and then add on more once you start making some money.
Use an Autoresponder
Once you’ve started your business, a core way to promote an affiliate offer is to create a series of emails relating to this product or area, and then have an autoresponder mailing list send these out to people who subscribe.
For example, if you are an affiliate for a baby safety product you could create several emails discussing this topic, and insert links to your recommended products within these emails. This is where you can inform visitors as well as promote to them. You will also be able to add their information to your email list, so that you can keep in touch with follow up messages or other promotional items they may be interested in at a later date.
Traffic and Promotion
Finally, promote your website as much as possible, as website traffic is the key to success with affiliate marketing. Add your URL to your email signature, and forums where allowed, link to it on your blog, and use twitter or facebook if approriate. Once you’ve mastered how to get the word out with one affiliate product, add another one and rise and repeat.
