1/. What is a Press Release?
Wikipedia.com states a Press Release as - A news release, press release or press statement is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something claimed as having news value. – wikipedia.com
Our Interpretation:
Businesses that have a newsworthy event related to their business write an interesting overview of the event. They then submit this to newspapers, televisions and radio stations, with the expectation that the media will either call them for an interview or publish the story about their particular event and business. However, not all Press Releases are published, you may like to first contact the particular media outlets you are planning on sending your release to, to check any particulars that they may require with Press Releases.
2/. So how can a Press Release help your website get traffic?
Press releases, can be a very effective tool to drive traffic to your website, if they are well written and used correctly. Imagine for a moment flicking through your local newspaper and reading an article about your business and a recent event; now how many other people are also reading that very same article? If it's a local paper, maybe a few hundred to a few thousand, but imagine if it is a national newpaper and you didn't spend a cent on advertising. Now that's great exposure.
3/. Important Points To Take Note Of.
Your Press Release must have something newsworthy to write about. Perhaps you have held a recent charity event and raised some much needed funds for a local charity. So what if your business doesn't have a newsworthy event to write a Press Release about - then create one.
If your press release includes a lot of hype and is written like an advertisement then it probably won't be published. It needs to be well written and informative. For example using a heading such as. "We have the solution to solve all of your problems" probably won't get the press release published. However if you look at it from a different angle, such as "After living with her extreme eczema all her life, Trudy wrote a book to assist others with their feelings of frustration." This kind of headline is much more likely to be looked at.
Editors receive 100's if not 1000's of press releases and if your's isn't formatted correctly and is full of spelling errors it will no doubt be thrown in the trash before the editor even has a chance to look over it.
4/. Press Releases also pose other benefits:
Not only do they give you the opportunity to have your business and website URL mentioned in front of a large audience, but, when it does work, it adds legitimacy to your business as well. You aren’t viewed by the readers as someone who paid to have their ad in the paper. You are considered valuable enough to be interviewed as a resource for their readers. That adds a lot of credibility not only to you but also to your business.
5/. Add a Media Page to your website.
After your press release has been published or you have been interviewed by the media, be sure to include a “Media Page” on your website to showcase all of that great exposure. This will prove to any interested media agencies that you are worth looking into, plus it adds further to your crediblilty in regards to potential customers. Include links to any online interviews, pdf copies of print interviews, and audio clips of recorded interviews. Overtime you will see a great showcase of your business and how it has grown through out the years.
