Technorati Explained

Technor….what? Ok so you haven’t heard of Technorati and if you have you may not know much about it. In a nutshell it is a Blog Directory, yes that’s right a directory of blogs.

As per their About Us page and at the time of writing this Technorati are currently tracking 70.2 million blogs! Wow that’s a huge number of blogs out there in the blogosphere and what about all of those bloggers that haven’t even heard of technorati and are yet to claim their blog. It is just mind boggling as to how many people are actually blogging today.

Ok so what does Technorati do or more importantly what can it do for you?

So we know that it is a blog directory, but it also allows you to search for blogs that cover topics that you interest you. Searching by niche, technorati tags or even by the blogs that are the most linked to. Technorati also has a favourites area where you can organize all of your favourite blogs in one easy to find place. You can also easily visit the most popular blogs on the directory as they are all listed together, set up watch lists for various blogs that you want to keep an eye on and just plain keep up to date on the whole blogoshpere thing.

Another great thing about this blog directory is that you can use it as an RSS Reader to keep up to date with your favourite blogs.

When you claim your blog and register on technorati your blog gets added to their ranking system. To ascertain the popularity of your blog, according to Technorati all you have to do is take a look at your ranking number. The smaller the number, the more popular your blog is.

There are a couple of things you can do to improve your blogs rank in Technorati, for example the more blogs that link to your blog will help to increase your rank and the more people that add your blog to their Technorati favourites list will also help out too.

So basically this blog directory (which remembering has over 70 million blogs currently) is a measurement of the popularity of your blog based on how many other blogs are linking to it.

To assist Technorati and those searching for specific blogs you can tag your posts; very much like using keywords on websites; which lets the directory and the users of it know what your blog is about.

By using Technorati you can actually increase your readership and find other great blogs in your niche.

Have you claimed your blog?
