How To Become A Ghostwriter

Ghostwriting SuccessHow to Become a Ghostwriter

Do you have a natural flair for writing and proofreading? Do you enjoy writing about pretty much anything, even if it is not in your area of expertise? Then maybe you should consider becoming a ghostwriter.

With more and more webmasters realizing the importance of high quality, original content on their websites, the demand for ghostwriters is growing.

So What Is a Ghostwriter Anyway?

A ghostwriter is someone that gets paid to write for other people. Generally they are hired on an as needs basis, however many ghostwriters obtain regular clients and regular work after having proved themselves with great quality writing. Once a ghostwriter has written the required article or book etc, and the customer has paid the ghostwriter for their services, the customer then owns the sole rights to the work. They are then free to put their own name on it and use it however they wish. The ghostwriter retains no rights and gets no public credit for the work.

What skills do I need?

Ghostwriters spend their time writing, reading and proof-reading, therefore your skills in these areas need to be proficient. You will also need to be a good communicator and have great grammar skills. Research is often required as you may find yourself writing about topics that you have no expertise in, so enjoying research is also a good asset to obtain.

What tools do I need to get started?

Generally you should be able to get started with items you would already have in your home office. A word processing program that you are familiar with, an internet connection and a fax machine will also assist. It would also be wise to have a good quality thesaurus and dictionary on hand too.

So how do I get started?

Firstly, like any online business, you will need a website. Here you have the option of hiring a designer to build it for you or you could use an online site builder to create one yourself. You’ll need to ensure that your website outlines the services you have available, what your rates are, how prospective clients can contact you and any other important information. Next on the list is to find your business some clients.

In reality it is going to take a lot longer than a day or two for your website to be up and running and to be swamped with work, although demand in the internet marketing community for skilled ghost writers is strong. Use this time to research your competition and find out ways to stand above them, which will help to ensure your long term success.

Online networking groups are a great way to get your business ‘out there’, to advertise what you do and start building some new relationships. There are also several freelance sites that allow clients to post projects for writers to bid on. Some of these sites however, require a paid membership from you before you can participate.

Building up your ghostwriting business will take some time and a little elbow grease. If you have the desire to be your own boss, work flexible hours that suit and to be home for your family then that motivation should keep you going even in the slow times.
